Newest Exhibition Opens

African-Americans of Ocean County

On February 04, 2009 the newest OCHS exhibition, African-Americans of Ocean County, opened at the Museum. The opening day program was presented by Mr. Sidney Taylor of New Egypt, NJ. Mr. Taylor is a noted educator and member of the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission. Mr. Taylor discussed slaves' passage through New Jersey on the way to free states, noting that New Jersey was considered a "slave state." It was interesting to hear about the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and listen to a distant relative of Harriet Ross Tubman describe the lives of the runaway slaves and their descendants.
