Holiday Express

Holidays + History = A Great Day!

At 8:45 AM on December 17th the Holiday Express left the OCHS Museum bound for Long Beach Island. Approximately 50 Society members and friends were looking forward to an interesting day. Everyone's expectations were surpassed by the sights, sounds, and food we experienced!

The first stop of the day was the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History in Beach Haven. Curator Deb Whitcraft introduced our group to the two year old museum containing artifacts from the S.S. Morro Castle disaster, the Andrea Doria - Stockholm collisoin, and many other maritime events that occured off the shores of New Jersey. Curator Jim Vogel presented many artifacts from shipwrecks of the 18th and 19th centuries, including recent discoveries that are still in the process of being cleaned.

Our second Express stop was the Long Beach Island Museum, also located in Beach Haven. At this location our guide, Suzette Whiting, discussed the history of LBI and of the church that is now the Museum. We enjoyed several rooms filled with wonderful memories of LBI's past. There were also memories of many of the storms that have battered the Island over the centuries.

Lunch was served at Buckalew's, around the corner from the Museum. At the end of a delicious meal, we were transported to the Surflight Theater and a production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas. This was a wonderful way to close our Holiday trip!

Our thanks for this delightful day go to Elena & George Tomkowich and Linda & Ron Janesko who planned and presented Holiday Express '08!!
