Community Service Information

High School Community Service Program

“Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It is important to
the person who serves as well as the recipient. It is the way in which we ourselves grow
and develop.” ~Dr. Dorothy I. Height

The community service program for high school students provides individuals in grades nine through twelve the opportunity to assist the Ocean County Historical Society’s volunteers in a variety of tasks related to the successful day-to-day operation of its Museum and Research Center. Students will learn about the many facets of the museum environment, including the history and preservation of the Elizabeth Sculthorpe Force House, its research center, adjacent structures, and grounds. Through hands-on projects, students will gain new skills that can be applied in the classroom, will develop an understanding of the occupations that have evolved for the “study of history,” and by their volunteerism will give back to their community.

Applicants should have an interest in history or related disciplines, be willing to commit to hours during one school semester, and have a desire to expand their knowledge through a valuable community service project.

Examples of projects in which students will be involved may include:

  • Library and museum inventory and record keeping
  • Oral history interviews and transcripts
  • Exhibit research and display
  • Program Assistance
  • Techniques to preserve the past and present
  • Beautification of the grounds through maintenance of the garden

To apply for a high school community service volunteer position, submit the following:

  • Application Form
  • Signed Release Form
  • Letter describing your reason for wishing to participate in the program

Upon review of your application packet, you will be contacted by the Internship Director for an interview. For further information, call 732-341-1880.
