Ocean County Historical Society Graduate Internship Program

Position Summary

The Ocean County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that is solely staffed by volunteers, offers unpaid internship opportunities to graduate students who are pursuing a Masters degree or advanced certification in a field of study related to the museum profession. Through work on a focused project selected in consultation with the interns volunteer supervisor at the Ocean County Historical Society and the college/university adviser, the student will gain valuable experience applying his/her academic skills within the environment of a fully operational small historic museum and research center.

Position Responsibilities

The graduate intern’s primary responsibility is to complete all components of a project within the time frame designated by the Ocean County Historical Society and the college/university advisor. This will generally span one semester. At the end of the internship, the intern is required to prepare a multimedia presentation for the Ocean County Historical Society Executive Board describing his/her project from its conception to its completion.

The intern will present this culminating activity to the Board at its regular monthly meeting.

Qualifications

The field of study or primary area of concentration for the prospective graduate intern should be in any of the following:

  • Museum Studies
  • Museum Education and Interpretation
  • Collections Management
  • Historical Preservation
  • Information Studies
  • History
  • Art History
  • Curatorial Practices and Exhibitions

Students enrolled in other fields of study that directly relate to the museum profession, who express an interest in the internship program, will be given consideration.

Schedule

The Ocean County Historical Society Internship Director and the graduate intern will determine a mutually convenient schedule that is also acceptable to the college/university advisor. The schedule should fall within the posted hours that the Ocean County Historical Society Museum is open. The Ocean County Historical Society volunteer supervisor and the graduate intern will maintain a record of the hours worked by the intern. Both parties will initial the document after each work session.

Prospective graduate interns should complete the Graduate Internship Application and return all materials at least 30 days prior to the start of the proposed internship. For additional information call our Internship Director at 732-341-1880.
