The following is a list of publications available from the Ocean County Historical Society. We’re proud that many of the titles available were created and published here.   • By Lawrence E. Barnes. DVM. MS & Carol Miller, MSW:  This is an index from the New Jersey Courier, Toms River, New Jersey.   It contains a listing of personnel engaged in the military forces of the United States from January 1, 1897 through December 1990.  The index was completed in March 2006.  
  • By The Ocean County Sun (newspaper):  The New Jersey shore areas are vulnerable to the wrath of nature.  This book contains the story and photos of the March 1962 storm that devastated the area.  
  • Locally produced recreation of the Toms River Blockhouse Battle of March 1782 narrated by former OCHS President Robert L. Garthwaite.
  • By William S. Dewey:  Discover a wealth of information about the Pineland communities of Manchester, Whiting, and Lakehurst.  A resident of the areas, Mr. Dewey has done extensive research into the development of industries in the area and the people who brought those industries to life.  Included are a description of railroad development, two railroad maps, and two early railroad timetables.  
  • By Ted Gordon: Charcoal making was a major industry in the Pine Barrens.  Herbert Payne was one of the last Charcoal Makers in the area.  Learn about Mr. Payne as well as the history of this amazing industry through photos and text.

  • By Patricia B. Mitchell:  Get a taste of tea history in the first section of this book.  The second section gives information about the kinds of tea.  In the final section you have many recipes that will tempt you.  The author has, also, included notes for you to learn even more about tea.  
  • By R. Marilyn Schmidt:  Find out about the types of bats that live in the northeastern United States.  The book tells how to solve bat problems, as well as how to remove them from inside a house and bat proof a home.  Want to cut down on insects?  Installing a bat house may be a safe and non-chemical way to get results.  The author has included a list of sources to locate more information about bats.  
  • By Ocean County Historical Society:  This book is a reproduction of a book originally prepared for an Ocean County Historical Society Museum exhibition in 2003.  The book is presented with color photographs, all of which are part of the Ocean County Historical Society collection.  Editing was done to correct typographical errors, but phrasing is faithful to the original.  Additional items from the Society’s collection have been added at the end of the publication.  
  • By Ocean County Historical Society:  This reprint of an 1888 brochure contains pictures of the shoreline, the bluff, the railroad bridge. as well as many homes that still exist in the town.  The Borough of Island Heights was founded in 1886.  It describes the 1888 summer Camp Meeting.  Included are a sample program from the meeting along with interesting and amusing advertisements from period merchants and real estate brokers.  
  • Compiled by Harry Applegate & Thomas Benton:  Six Flage Great Adventure boasts a rich history.  In this collection of vintage-photograph postcards, the authors explore the park’s past.  Contains 15 Historic Postcards.  
  • By Vivian Zinkin:  This book is a comprehensive study of place name origins in Ocean County.  Place Names of Ocean County sheds light on how various names came to exist.  An 1849 Robert E. Horner map of Ocean County is included.
  • By Ocean County Historical Society: A compilation of facts and personal quotes and remembrances of Elizabeth Sculthorpe Force.  She grew up in the house that is now Ocean County Historical Society’s residence.  The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

    By Cedric Derecho:  A work of fiction about William Foulks, a real man who lived in Lakehurst, New Jersey in the late 1800s until 1961.  The author writes in the first person with his own style as the voice of the main character growing up in Lakehurst.
  • Compiled by Elizabeth Ann Grant:  The church and burying ground are located in Lacey Township, Ocean County, New Jersey on the east side of Route 9 in the Murray Grove section of Lanoka Harbor, just north of Forked River.  Many of the old settlers in and around Cedar Creek are buried here.  The book contains an alphabetical listing of the stones in the cemetery.  The list was compiled in June 1970 and includes the older section of the cemetery.  There is background information about Good Luck (Potter’s) Churchyard and Cemetery, excerpts from Rose Grover Garthwaite’s Good Luck Settlement, and excerpts from Kobbe’s Jersey Coast and Pines, pages 70-71 (Original printing 1889 Gustave Kobbe).

Miller:  This booklet about the historic village of Double Trouble is a brief informational guide to take you through the long history of a pinelands industrial village nestled in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.  This “gem” of a historic site and its unique botanical plants of native New Jersey flora is one of the best kept secrets in the state.  Its isolation from any nearby town or village has kept this site in pristine native condition, except for the natural deterioration of buildings in the village.  The old saw mill once again hums as it saws local cedar and cedar shingles.  The cranberry sorting house and tiny one room school along with other building have been stabilized.  Double Trouble State Park is located within the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail.

  • By Congregation B’nai Israel of Toms River:  The egg farming industry owes much of its development in Toms River to the Jewish community.  Jewish families share the stories of their immigration from various locations in the United States and Europe to the town of Toms River.  Their many contributions added to the growth of the area.
  • By Patricia H. Burke:  The Barnegat Bay area from 1880 to 1920 was home to numerous local decoy carvers.  Pictures of the local carvers and their decoys as well as the known gunning clubs in the Barnegat Bay area are included.  
  • By Carolyn M. Campbell, M. Peryl King, Martha T. Smith:  The story of one-room schools moves from the mid 1800’s, when schools were in such disrepair that chickarees (squirrels) nested in the walls, to 1943 when the last one-room school was closed.   Over 100 photos and maps, interviews with teachers and pupils, and quotations from the time emphasize the changes that have occurred in education during this century.  Specific information about the county’s 76 one-room and 8 multiroom schools is given in the directory.  
  • Compiled by William A. King, Jr. and Adolph Wooley:  Late 19th century and early 20th century downtown Toms River is depicted in 56 pages of many photos never before published.  Photos include Washington Street, Water Street, Main Street and various other locations.
